چکیده
Magnetic Resonance Imaging has the ability to describe vessel wall thickness, plaque structure, distinguish fibrotic, fatty, calcific or hemorrhagic contents with excellent soft tissue contrast. Our aim in this study is determine symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid morphology imaging properties. We tried understand whether components images match histopathological sections. MRI was performed 37 patients known have stenosis endarterectomy decision been taken. 24 were 13 for disease. A surface coil used MRI; 5 cm of segment imaged bifurcation middle. Necrotic core, fibrous cap, hemorrhage, calcification intraluminal thrombus determined MR images. After surgery, specimens evaluated by a pathologist who blind radiological findings. All (necrotic cap) can be separated from each-other MRI. core detected 87.9% on No significant difference found between cases terms rate dimensions necrotic The presence did not show cases. sensitivity detecting in-plaque hemorrhage calculated as 82.3% specificity 68.75%. rates interpreted distinguishing without bleeding. Fibrous cap more preserved patients. structure atheroma distinguished each other statistical results expected performance mainly due small number cases, which main limitation study.

Prognostic value of high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging in evaluating carotid atherosclerotic plaque in patients with ischemic stroke
BACKGROUND Ischemic stroke (IS) is a devastating occurrence affecting millions worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HRMRI) in assessing carotid atherosclerotic plaque in IS patients. METHODS Between January 2013 and March 2015, 338 IS patients were recruited for the investigative purposes of the study. All participants of ...
متن کاملPreoperative detection of the composition of atherosclerotic plaque in the carotid artery using ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging.
Preoperative identification of the components of atherosclerotic plaque was attempted using ultrasonography in five patients and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in three patients before carotid endarterectomy. The correlation between surgical and histological findings, and preoperative ultrasonography and MR imaging was evaluated. Plaque consisting predominantly of calcification appeared as bri...
متن کاملQuantitative magnetic resonance imaging analysis of neovasculature volume in carotid atherosclerotic plaque.
BACKGROUND Neovasculature within atherosclerotic plaques is believed to be associated with infiltration of inflammatory cells and plaque destabilization. The aim of the present investigation was to determine whether the amount of neovasculature present in advanced carotid plaques can be noninvasively measured by dynamic, contrast-enhanced MRI. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 20 consecutive pat...
متن کاملMeasurement of atherosclerotic carotid plaque size in vivo using high resolution magnetic resonance imaging.
BACKGROUND Current imaging modalities, such as contrast angiography, accurately determine the degree of luminal narrowing but provide no direct information on plaque size. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), however, has potential for noninvasively determining arterial wall area (WA). This study was conducted to determine the accuracy of in vivo MRI for measuring the cross-sectional maximum wall ...
